Cardoso Junior and the Delirious Logic of Color
Origins
Cardoso Junior's painting begins where observation turns unstable. A visual artist, graphic designer, illustrator, and Master in Philosophy from the Universidade Federal do Ceara, he emerged in the 1980s as one of the founders and participants of Fratura Exposta, an influential group of Ceara artists that helped mark the cultural scene of the period through new forms of expression and artistic questioning. Born in Fortaleza, where he still lives and works, Cardoso Junior brings together the urban present, Northeastern popular imagination, philosophy, comics, surrealist freedom, and expressionist intensity. His official biography describes a practice shaped by delirious imagination, strong visual impact, and a careful command of color, from subtle effects to dense chromatic constructions. The four selected works show that imagination is not a flight away from reality, but a way of pressing on it. O racional, o sensivel e o espiritual, with its trio of figures and vivid red field, turns thought, sensation, and spiritual force into bodies sharing the same charged space. The composition is direct, almost theatrical, yet its figures seem to belong equally to painting, cartoon, dream, and allegory. Domingo moves differently, organizing a dense blue ground around a face, animal presence, plant forms, and an atmosphere of suspended ritual. In both paintings, color does not simply fill the image. It stages a collision between states of mind. See also Delson Uchoa and the Latitude of Color.

The more creaturely works deepen that collision. Cobroide - Casal gives the body an impossible anatomy, joining figures into a hybrid presence that feels comic, erotic, grotesque, and mythic at once. The fourth work, with its crouched grey figure, dotted yellow-and-black cap, red-orange ground, and small green growths near the ear, turns portraiture into an event of transformation. Cardoso Junior's biography notes that his forms and creatures often emerge from the painting itself, without a predefined theme, and that only at the end of the process does the artist understand what has appeared. These images make that method visible: figures arrive as if summoned by color, line, and an internal logic the painting discovers while being made.

For CASCA, Cardoso Junior matters because he extends the fantastic in Brazilian visual art from a Fortaleza-based perspective, treating fantasy as critique rather than ornament. His references range from German Expressionism and Surrealism to mass culture, comics, and the irony and symbolic richness of Northeastern popular culture. Solo exhibitions include Galeria Suzanna Sassoun in Sao Paulo, MAUC at the Universidade Federal do Ceara, Tratado Sobre o Tempo at Kaleydoscope Galeria, and the retrospective Pinturas, 1985-2018 at DB Galeria. His prizes at Salao de Abril, UNIFOR Plastica, Talento 87, and the Salao Paulista de Arte Contemporanea underline a long career, but the paintings themselves are the clearest argument: Cardoso Junior makes reality stranger so that it can be seen again.
